NATO & Iran: US Strikes, European Unity & Trump’s Support

March 22, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg affirmed his expectation that European allies will ultimately coalesce in support of a response to Iran, following a sharp rebuke from former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the alliance’s perceived lack of commitment. The comments came as tensions escalate following threats from Trump regarding potential military action against Iran, and in the wake of reported U.S. Strikes within the country.

Trump, currently campaigning for a return to the presidency, has publicly criticized NATO members for not providing sufficient support in what he characterized as a “US–Israel war on Iran.” He reportedly labeled NATO allies as “cowards” for failing to offer more substantial assistance, particularly concerning security in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil supplies.

Stoltenberg responded to Trump’s criticism, stating that he anticipates European nations will ultimately unite in a collective response. “I expect Europe will come together,” he said, according to reports. This statement followed a meeting where the NATO chief also backed U.S. Strikes on Iran, signaling a degree of alignment despite Trump’s public attacks.

The criticism from Trump centers on the perceived need for NATO assistance in safeguarding maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. He has specifically demanded greater European involvement in securing the region, a demand that appears to have been largely unmet.

While several NATO members have remained largely silent on the matter, a little contingent of nations – including Canada and five smaller European countries – have publicly expressed some level of support for Trump’s stance. Though, the extent of that support remains limited, and the majority of European allies have not publicly endorsed his approach.

Iran, for its part, has warned that any further aggression from the United States could lead to “irreversible damage” to the region. This warning followed Trump’s threats and underscores the high stakes involved in the escalating conflict. Iranian officials have also reiterated concerns about the potential for broader regional instability.

The situation remains fluid, with no immediate resolution in sight. Stoltenberg has not outlined specific actions NATO might take, and the alliance’s response remains contingent on further developments and the positions of individual member states. No further meetings between NATO officials and the Trump campaign have been scheduled.
