NATO Chief Denies Greenland Sovereignty Compromised in Trump Talks
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Thursday refuted reports suggesting Greenland’s sovereignty was jeopardized during discussions with former US President Donald Trump regarding Trump’s interest in acquiring the autonomous Danish island.
Reports had indicated that Rutte proposed a “creative solution” to satisfy Trump, perhaps involving transferring sovereignty of the Pituffik military base to the US, with the possibility of further concessions in the future. Rutte denied these claims.
Trump’s desire to purchase Greenland was publicly known during his presidency. In 2019,he reportedly discussed the idea with advisors, sparking controversy and ultimately being dismissed by the Danish government. The BBC reported at the time that the idea was “firmly rejected” by Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.
The Pituffik Space Base, also known as Thule Air Base, is a US Space Force facility located in Greenland. It plays a crucial role in space surveillance and missile warning systems. The US Space Force maintains a notable presence at the base under an agreement with Denmark.
While details of the private conversations between Rutte and Trump remain largely undisclosed, Rutte’s denial aims to reassure both Denmark and greenland that their sovereignty was not under negotiation. Further developments will be covered in our liveblog.
