Nathalie van Berkel Resigns: Dutch Finance Secretary CV Controversy

by Priya Shah – Business Editor

Nathalie van Berkel, a candidate for the position of State Secretary of Finance, has withdrawn her candidacy following scrutiny of inconsistencies in her curriculum vitae. The move comes after reports surfaced questioning the accuracy of her educational background, prompting a swift response from the D66 party and raising questions about the vetting process for political appointments.

The initial reports, which triggered the controversy, detailed discrepancies in Van Berkel’s claimed qualifications. While the specific nature of those discrepancies has not been fully detailed, the attention led to a review of her CV and ultimately her decision to step aside.

Johan Derksen, a commentator on the Dutch program Vandaag Inside, sharply criticized the situation, stating that someone who commits fraud should not be allowed to remain in parliament. “Ongelooflijk dat iemand die fraude pleegt gewoon kan blijven. Dan ben je toch ook ongeloofwaardig?” Derksen said, according to a transcript published by Vandaag Inside. He further suggested that the response would have been more severe had the situation involved a different political party.

Despite withdrawing from the state secretary role, Van Berkel will remain a member of the Dutch Parliament, a decision that has drawn further criticism.

Political commentator Wouter de Winther, writing in De Telegraaf, suggested the situation reflects a pattern within D66. De Winther’s column, as reported by De Telegraaf, alleges a recurring tendency within the party to employ questionable tactics.

The withdrawal of Van Berkel represents an early test for D66 party leader Rob Jetten, who had publicly supported her candidacy. Jetten previously stated that Van Berkel had been “always open and honest” towards the party, according to reports.

The situation is unfolding as D66 faces increased scrutiny over its internal processes and the integrity of its candidates. The party has not yet announced a replacement for Van Berkel in the role of State Secretary of Finance.
