Nantes Terraces Reopen & Stunning Pink Moon Sighting
Nantes residents will soon be able to enjoy outdoor dining as terraces reopen, coinciding with the anticipated arrival of a spectacular “rose moon” on the night of April 2nd and 3rd, 2026. The full moon, known as the rose moon, will reach peak brightness at approximately 2:12 AM France time, positioned opposite the sun in the sky.
While the moon won’t actually appear rose-colored, the phenomenon derives its name from North American traditions linking the April full moon to the blooming of wild phlox flowers. The color of the moon can range from off-white to orange or even reddish, due to the way sunlight filters through the Earth’s atmosphere. This year’s rose moon is also a “Supermoon,” meaning it will appear larger and brighter than other full moons.
The event is expected to be visible to the naked eye, weather permitting. According to Meteo Consult, the rose moon marks the return of spring and is associated with themes of rebirth and new beginnings. The full moon’s peak luminosity will occur during the day, but it will be clearly visible in the nights leading up to and following April 2nd.
The rose moon is the first full moon of spring, following the spring equinox on March 20th, adding to its symbolic significance. Observers are advised to find a location away from light pollution and look towards the east at dusk for the best viewing experience. No telescope is required to appreciate the spectacle.
The city of Nantes has not issued any specific statements regarding viewing events, but the timing coincides with the anticipated reopening of outdoor terraces, offering residents and visitors an opportunity to enjoy the celestial event while dining outdoors.
