Nagie Lane’s mikako on Gender Equity and the Power of Individual Expression
The Women In Music initiative, launched in Japan in 2022 following Billboard’s global honors, celebrates female artists, producers, and executives who shape the entertainment industry. For mikako, serving as the emcee for the EQUAL STAGE event provided an unexpected mirror for her own professional life. She noted that the gathering prompted her to reexamine subtle, uncomfortable dynamics she had previously brushed aside, such as the persistent societal stereotype that labels women as overly emotional during high-stakes discussions.
“Personally, in important discussions for example, I’ve had moments where my voice trembled a bit or I nearly cried,” mikako stated in the Billboard Japan interview. “When that happens, I’ve worried that I’d just be seen as being emotional, and that my actual point wouldn’t be treated as an equal opinion.”
Global Perspectives Formed in Vienna Classrooms
This acute awareness of societal framing traces back to mikako’s formative years. Growing up attending school in Vienna, Austria, she found herself surrounded by classmates from Sri Lanka, the United States, China, and Italy. Different languages, skin colors, and religious traditions were not abstract concepts in her daily routine; they were the fabric of everyday conversation.
That multicultural grounding heavily influences how Nagie Lane functions today. Formed in 2018 as an a cappella ensemble before transitioning to a chorus group, the trio currently brings together members of different ages and genders. Rather than viewing friction as a liability, mikako credits honest, direct communication for keeping the group cohesive through various lineup changes.
“Because we each bring a different perspective, the group is bound to get better,” she explained to Billboard Japan. “I think it’s important to always be thinking about respecting and acknowledging those differences.”

The June 9 event featured live performances from a star-studded all-female lineup, including ATARASHII GAKKO!, Hitsujibungaku, LANA, and Awich. Each act brought a distinct sonic profile and message to the SGC Hall Ariake stage. Watching from the wings, mikako observed how the artists leaned entirely into their lived experiences rather than conforming to rigid industry molds.
Reflecting on ATARASHII GAKKO!’s concept of going beyond boundaries while respecting structure, mikako emphasized that authentic self-expression requires zero artifice. She applied this same philosophy to her personal presentation onstage, consciously choosing performance outfits based on mobility and comfort rather than traditional expectations of femininity.
“Having grown up in Vienna, I hadn’t really been exposed to what’s generally considered ‘kawaii’ in Japan, so I wasn’t very conscious of that to begin with,” she noted, explaining her preference for performing in pants.

Beyond individual style, the interview tackled the broader structural changes required to achieve true equity across the Japanese creative sector. Mikako argued that gender equity should not be viewed as forced sameness, but rather as a commitment to ensuring individuals receive the proper consideration they deserved from the outset.
