Mýa Opens Up About Choosing Career Over Customary Family Path
LOS ANGELES, CA – Singer Mýa has revealed she never prioritized marriage or motherhood, attributing her perspective to observations from her upbringing and a desire for personal and creative fulfillment. The Grammy Award-winning artist shared her thoughts on the “Hot & Bothered” podcast with Melyssa Ford, explaining how societal expectations never aligned with her personal goals.
Mýa stated, “Its not even my focus, and it never has been.” She credits her outlook to witnessing her parents’ divorce and other experiences, which led her to question “the fairytale images” often associated with weddings and family life. This caution prompted her to “escape too much in my work,” building a life centered around authenticity rather than adhering to conventional timelines.
The artist explained that she actively chose to “strip a lot of things that are expected of me” – specifically marriage and children – to achieve happiness. She acknowledged societal pressure suggesting something is “wrong with you” if these milestones aren’t reached, but affirmed she never felt a desire for them based on her personal experiences.
While not entirely closing the door on the possibility of motherhood,Mýa admitted the desire “never kicked in.” She pondered, ”What is that feeling that I get with puppies? Is that going to happen with babies for me?” However, she currently enjoys fulfilling relationships with nieces, nephews, and godchildren.
Currently, Mýa is focused on “a specific assignment” of personal growth and creative freedom, remaining ”open to all things” but prioritizing her current path. She emphasized, “Not to say it’s not possible, and I’m not open to it… I’m on a specific assignment. That’s all.”
