WARRENSBURG, Mo. – the Murray State College men’s wrestling team competed at the UCM Roger Denker Open on Sunday. It was great mat time against a deep field, including several NCAA Division I and II programs.
At 125 pounds, Desmond Mayfield had a tough draw. He lost a major decision to Central Oklahoma’s Aden Sanders. Then, he fell in the consolation round to Avila’s Aaron Gomez.
Gavin Wehr wrestled in the 133-pound bracket. He opened against the University of Central Missouri’s Gavin Moore. Wehr battled into the consolation rounds, but Dakota Fenwick from Carl Albert State eliminated him.
Kade Carter was a bright spot for the Aggies. He started with a 7-2 decision over UCM’s Joey Blevins. Carter then upset Division II’s No. 8 ranked wrestler, Lander’s David Gonsalez, with a 3-1 victory. He reached the quarterfinals before falling to Division I opponent, Northern Colorado’s Isaiah Saldana. It wasn’t enough to place, but it was a strong showing.
At 149 pounds, Colton Schultz went 0-2 on the day. He lost to UCM’s Zach Karr and then to Oklahoma City’s Hunter Thompson.
Jordan Williams competed at 157 pounds. He dropped his opening match to Division I opponent, Iowa State’s Cael Swiderski. He didn’t place, but gained valuable experience.
The Aggies will be back in action on January 27th at the Bethany College Open.It’s another chance to improve and compete.
