M&S CEO Slams “Bureaucratic Madness” of Post-brexit Food Labels as Deal Nears
Belfast, Northern Ireland – June 28, 2025 – Marks & Spencer (M&S) CEO Stuart machin has sharply criticized the ongoing requirement for “Not for EU” labels on food products shipped from Great Britain to Northern Ireland, calling it “bureaucratic madness.” The phasing in of these labels began in 2023, with the final implementation stage due next week, but Machin argues they will soon be redundant as the UK and EU edge closer to finalizing a new agrifood agreement.
The labels are a direct consequence of the Windsor Framework, the revised Brexit deal designed to mitigate trade disruptions in Northern Ireland.Though,with a new agreement anticipated,the continued labeling requirement is drawing ire from businesses.
“The deal can’t come soon enough,” Machin stated, highlighting the administrative burden placed on companies like M&S.
