Mr Motivator: UK Child ‘Bed Poverty’ Crisis Demands Government Action

March 24, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Derrick Evans, known to millions as Mr Motivator, is intensifying his campaign to compel the UK government to address what he calls “bed poverty,” as new figures reveal a significant surge in families struggling to afford basic bedroom necessities. The former GMTV fitness instructor is urging ministers to formally recognize the issue as a national crisis and integrate it into child poverty planning.

The call comes as Barnardo’s, the children’s charity, reports a nearly 40% increase in demand for essential furniture, including beds, from struggling families across the UK. Between January and March 16, 2026, 261 households sought assistance from Barnardo’s for beds, cots, tables, chairs, sofas, food, and window coverings – a substantial rise from the 187 households accessing similar services in the first quarter of 2025.

“Beds can end up at the bottom of the list for families in a desperate position, and the consequences are enormous,” Evans stated. “Not having a proper bed or getting a great night’s sleep affects children’s health, their mood, their learning ability, behaviour and emotional stability.” He expressed frustration that the issue is often subsumed within broader poverty statistics, obscuring its specific impact.

Barnardo’s has described beds as becoming “like a luxury item” as the ongoing war in Iran threatens to further exacerbate cost of living pressures. Ruth Welford, Barnardo’s head of special projects, highlighted the dire circumstances faced by some families. “Families are still really struggling to meet basic needs – and I can’t imagine current events are going to make it any easier,” she said. Welford detailed instances of children sleeping on pallets, in toddler-sized beds, or with bedding affected by mould due to inadequate housing conditions.

The scale of the problem was underscored by a 2023 poll commissioned by Barnardo’s and YouGov, which found that 226,000 families in the UK have children sharing beds with adults or siblings due to financial hardship. Beyond the lack of beds, Welford noted issues with families lacking the resources for basic hygiene, such as washing clothes, and the challenges posed by temporary and overcrowded accommodation.

The impact of inadequate sleep and unstable living conditions is being felt in schools. Leon Evans, head of Year 7 at Canons High School in Edgware, north London, described how families are being displaced and children are forced to travel long distances to maintain their education. “Sleep allows students to learn. Not having a bed, not having a secure place to sleep impacts that,” he said. He noted the cumulative effect of these challenges over a student’s academic career, potentially hindering their opportunities.

In response to the growing crisis, Evans has launched Mr Motivator’s Bed Bank, a charity dedicated to providing beds to children in need, and initiated a petition calling for government recognition of “bed poverty.” Barnardo’s is too collaborating with Simba, a beds and bedding brand, to distribute bed bundles to vulnerable families.

The Department for Work and Pensions has pointed to the recent removal of the two-child limit for universal credit claimants, effective April 6, as a measure expected to lift 450,000 children “on a pathway out of poverty.” The department also highlighted plans to expand free school meals to all families on universal credit from the start of the 2026 school year, increase access to free breakfast clubs, and establish 1,000 Best Start family hubs across England by 2028.
