August 10, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Sara Sanchez, 27, and her 5-month-old daughter Antonella Garcia died when a 21-foot motorboat capsized near Liberty Island in New York Harbor late Saturday, August 8, 2026. According to the New York City Police Department and the U.S. Coast Guard, the vessel was carrying 14 people when it overturned around 10:30 p.m., prompting federal custody for the boat operator, 46-year-old Manuel Hernandez, who faces 13 counts of reckless endangerment.

Tragedy in New York Harbor

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, 12 people were initially pulled from the water by responding partner agencies and a Good Samaritan vessel before police arrived on the scene. Emergency responders from the NYPD, FDNY, and Air Sea Rescue converged on the darkened harbor as blue and red emergency lights flashed across the water.

Among those rescued from the water were Sara Sanchez and her infant daughter Antonella Garcia, both residents of Queens. Emergency personnel transported them to a local hospital, where both victims were pronounced dead. Surviving passengers, primarily from Queens alongside one individual from Manhattan’s Upper East Side, were transported to Brooklyn’s Lutheran Hospital in stable condition with minor injuries.

Operator Arrested and Federal Custody Imposed

The operator of the capsized 2019 white Yamaha AR210, Manuel Hernandez, was taken into custody following the incident. According to the New York City Police Department, Hernandez has been charged with 13 counts of reckless endangerment. Federal authorities have since stepped into the matter, moving Hernandez into federal custody by Sunday night as investigations intensified.

The U.S. Coast Guard stated that investigators are actively examining whether the vessel was operating as an illegal charter. Under federal maritime definitions, an illegal charter involves any passenger-for-hire vessel operation that lacks mandatory Coast Guard credentials, safety equipment, and required inspection certificates. Officials noted that further charges against Hernandez are likely as the multiagency investigation continues.

Vessel Capacity and Harbor Safety Concerns

Questions surrounding the safety and passenger capacity of the vessel immediately surfaced following the accident. Public specifications indicate that the 21-foot Yamaha AR210 typically features a passenger capacity of about 10 people. However, maritime safety experts emphasize that environmental conditions and specific locations within New York Harbor demand even stricter weight and passenger limits.

A well-placed maritime source characterized recreational boating in the area as the “Wild West,” citing uncharted debris, bridge abutments, commercial shipping channels, and marine plane traffic as constant hazards for small craft. Coast Guard Sector New York Commander Captain Doreen McCarthy addressed the incident in an official statement, expressing deep condolences to the victims’ families while praising the swift, heroic response of partner agencies and commercial vessels like “Sea The City,” whose crew rescued 11 individuals and coordinated their transport to land in Brooklyn.

Furthermore, community support networks and municipal agencies continue to coordinate resources, with local establishments such as Il Punto restaurant organizing crowdfunding campaigns to assist grieving families through the aftermath of the tragedy.
