Motagua Advances to Central American Cup Quarterfinals, Saprissa Eliminated
San Pedro Sula, Honduras – Motagua secured their place in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Concacaf Central American Cup, finishing as Group C leaders despite a 0-0 draw against Saprissa in Costa Rica. The result marked a surprising elimination for Saprissa, who were considered favorites in the group.
Motagua concluded the group stage with 8 points, earning their qualification as group winners. Saprissa adn Cartaginés both finished with 7 points, but Cartaginés advanced on goal difference, eliminating Saprissa. CAI Panama finished with 6 points, and Verdes Belize ended with zero points.
The Honduran side, nicknamed the Blue Cyclone, achieved a important result by earning a positive outcome on Costa Rican soil, a feat previously accomplished by manager Javier López with his team. Saprissa, known as the Purple Monster, failed to overcome Motagua’s defensive structure.
In a separate Group C match, Cartaginés delivered a dominant performance, defeating CAI Panama 4-0. This result, combined with Motagua’s draw, secured Cartaginés’ advancement to the quarterfinals alongside Motagua.
The quarterfinals will feature Motagua and Cartaginés as representatives from Group C. Motagua’s undefeated run through the group stage highlights their strong form in the competition.
