SOUTH BEND, Ind. – A significant change is underway at one of South Bend’s most cherished landmarks. The Morris Performing Arts Center will soon be connected to the new Raclin Murphy Encore Center, marking a pivotal moment in the city’s cultural landscape.
A New Hub for the Arts
Construction is progressing rapidly on the multimillion-dollar Raclin Murphy Encore Center, designed to complement and expand the capabilities of the historic Morris Performing Arts Center. The project aims to create a dynamic hub for arts and entertainment, offering enhanced amenities and expanded programming.
“With a 103-year-old building, you don’t really know what you’ll find when it comes to connecting those buildings, but we’re trying to make sure that this dark period space that we have right now allows us to give us and gives us the time to do that,” explained Dezha Moore, the city of South Bend general manager of venues for South Bend Venues Parks and Arts.
Did You Know? The Morris Performing Arts center originally opened in 1922 as the Palais Theater, a vaudeville house, before undergoing several transformations and ultimately becoming the Morris we know today.
Inside the Raclin Murphy Encore Center
The first floor of the Encore Center will feature a spacious lobby, modern restrooms, and a grand staircase leading to the upper level. The upper level will house a new bar and lounge, a dedicated memorabilia area celebrating past performers, and a thoughtfully designed sensory room.
The space will also be available for public rental, providing a versatile venue for a variety of events. City officials envision the Morris Performing Arts Center as a central cultural destination for all residents.
“We want to continue to make sure that the Morris is looked at as the city’s theater. you know a theater that is able to have something for everyone,” Moore added.
Architectural Details and Design
the design incorporates large windows offering scenic views of the city and the St. Joseph River. A striking light fixture, mirroring the iconic chandelier in the Morris, will adorn the staircase, creating a cohesive visual experience.”So like what occurs here in the old space in the Raclin Murphy Center, those that very long get chandelier will flicker as well to let patrons know whether they’re in the lounge, whether they are in the EIA space to, you know make thier way to the theater and take their seats to enjoy the show,” Moore stated.
Pro Tip: Sensory rooms, like the one planned for the Encore Center, are increasingly common in public venues to provide a calming space for individuals with sensory sensitivities, promoting inclusivity and accessibility.
Beyond the Encore Center: Future Development
Alongside the Encore Center, plans are underway for a potential parking garage and an adjacent apartment building. The city is partnering with Seven Diamonds to develop a thorough plan for the area. Patrick Sherman, the city of South Bend director of project management and Public Works, noted, “There’s been a garage that’s been desired for quite a long time. So we have now a partner, it’s public knowledge with seven diamonds, and the city will be working with them to try and come up with a development plan for the space. Hopefully if everything works out, we’ll be doing the parking garage as well as the apartment building above it. They are still working on a lot of the details.”
