Morocco-EU Trade: Tomato Exports Down Slightly, Courgette Sales Plummet – 2026 Data

March 23, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Agricultural trade between Morocco and the European Union (EU) is showing diverging trends across different sectors during the 2025-2026 campaign, according to data released this week. Volumes of tomato exports have experienced a slight decrease, even as shipments of courgettes have contracted more significantly.

As of March 15th, cumulative flows to the EU market reached 203,390 tonnes of tomatoes and 22,930 tonnes of courgettes, according to figures compiled from European Commission data by specialized platforms.

The tariff quota allocated to Morocco for the current campaign, running from October 1st, 2025, to May 31st, 2026, is currently utilized to over 71%. The quota for tomato exports is set at 285,000 tonnes, and as of March 15th, Moroccan deliveries totaled 203,390 tonnes, representing 71.36% of the allocated amount.

Year-on-year comparisons indicate a moderate decline, with shipments down 2.6% compared to the same period in the previous campaign. Weekly flows remain robust, with 9,930 tonnes of Moroccan tomatoes entering the EU market between March 9th and March 15th.

The courgette segment, however, is experiencing a more pronounced downturn. Against a quota of 56,000 tonnes applicable from October 1st to April 20th, volumes shipped to the EU by March 15th totaled 22,930 tonnes, or 40.95% of the authorized total.

This represents a significant gap compared to the previous campaign, with current export figures 30.4% lower than those recorded during the same period last year. Weekly flows remain limited, with only 541 tonnes of courgettes reaching the EU market between March 9th and March 15th.

The European Union and Morocco reaffirmed their commitment to a strategic partnership in early March, according to a joint statement released following the 15th Association Council between the EU and Morocco. The statement highlighted the need to address regional and global challenges. Kaja Kallas, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, issued the joint statement on March 20, 2026.

Relations between Morocco and the EU are primarily based on the European Neighbourhood Policy, the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership, and the Union for the Mediterranean, with Morocco benefiting from an advanced status allowing for high-level political cooperation. An association agreement signed in 2000 establishes the main legal links between Morocco and the EU, supplemented by agreements in areas such as fisheries (2006) and Open Skies.

A joint parliamentary commission between Morocco and the European Union met in Rabat on October 29, 2025, after a two-year hiatus, to discuss ongoing cooperation.
