Orangeburg, S.C. – The South Carolina State Bulldogs face a key Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) matchup against the Morgan State Bears Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. ET at the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center. The game comes as both teams navigate crucial stages of the conference season, with implications for postseason positioning.
South Carolina State (7-19 5-5 MEAC) is looking to rebound from a 90-71 road loss to Norfolk State on February 21st. Sophomore guard Jayden Johnson led the Bulldogs in that contest with 18 points and four rebounds, although Cameron Clark added 16 points and seven rebounds. SCSU currently ranks second in the MEAC in three-point field goal percentage at .339 and fifth in scoring, averaging 66.0 points per game.
Morgan State (11-14 7-3 MEAC) enters the game having secured an 82-68 home win against Delaware State last Saturday. Senior guard Alfred Worrell Jr. Leads the Bears in scoring, averaging 17.6 points per game, while shooting 40 percent from the field and 38 percent from beyond the arc. Rob Lawson has also emerged as a key offensive threat, averaging 12.8 points per game.
The Bears’ recent success is bolstered by the addition of graduate transfer Elijah Davis, who is averaging 13.8 points and a team-high 6.0 assists per game – ranking 22nd nationally in that category. Davis was named MEAC Co-Player of the Week on February 23rd. Graduate guard Walter Peggs Jr., a transfer from Spring Hill College, adds further experience to the Bears’ roster.
The series between the two teams is closely contested, with South Carolina State holding a narrow 48-44 lead. The Bulldogs have won four of the last five meetings, including a decisive 90-62 victory over Morgan State on February 15, 2025. While, Morgan State secured a 72-67 win in their last encounter on January 10, 2026, led by 18 points from Davis and 17 from Lawson.
Morgan State head coach Kevin Broadus is in his seventh season, aiming to build on recent successes that include a MEAC Tournament championship game appearance in 2021. South Carolina State is led by fourth-year head coach Erik Martin, who previously served as an assistant coach under Bob Huggins at West Virginia for 16 seasons. Martin’s Bulldogs were picked to finish third in the MEAC preseason poll, with Johnson earning Preseason Player of the Year honors.
Following Wednesday’s game, Morgan State is scheduled to host Howard on Saturday, February 28th, in another key conference showdown. South Carolina State’s next game is yet to be announced.
