Morena Celebrates Anniversary with National Auditorium Rally
Marking fifteen years since its origins as a civil association, Morena is holding a major gathering at the Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City, bringing together governors, legislators, and party members to mark its anniversary.
Celebration at the Auditorio Nacional Marks Fifteen Years of History
National party leader Ariadna Montiel stated that the meeting aims to remind participants where the movement comes from and what it fights for. The Movimiento de Regeneración Nacional began as a civil association before evolving into a formal political force under the leadership of Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
The Instituto de Investigaciones Jurídicas de la UNAM details in its party history document that the movement was established with an eye toward the 2012 elections. During those early foundational phases, Andrés Manuel López Obrador served as President of the National Council, while Martí Batres Guadrrama held the position of President of the National Executive Committee.
The Path to Official Party Registration in 2014
The formal path toward official recognition accelerated on April 1, 2014. On that date, the Instituto Federal Electoral appointed a specific commission to evaluate whether Morena satisfied all legal criteria for political party status. That evaluation commission consisted of counselor president María Marván alongside counselors Marco Antonio Baños Martínez and Lorenzo Córdova Vianello.

Following the review process, the registration of Morena as a political party was approved unanimously on July 9, 2014. At the time of the official approval, López Obrador expressed his pride in participating in the creation of the new political institution.
Morena Secures Two Presidential Victories
Alongside López Obrador, several key political figures closely supported the creation and early growth of the party. Marcelo Ebrard stood out as a longtime political ally dating back to their shared tenure in the now-defunct Partido de la Revolución Democratico. Ebrard currently serves as the Secretary of Economy and previously directed the Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores.
The movement secured a presidential victory when López Obrador won the 2018 election and subsequently assumed the presidency. Morena won its second presidential election in 2024, elevating Claudia Sheinbaum to the presidency. Before winning the national executive office, Sheinbaum served as the Head of Government of Mexico City and as the mayor of Tlalpan under the Morena banner.
Fifteen years after its initial formation as a civil association and twelve years following its formal registration by electoral authorities, the organization convenes its national structure in Mexico City to review its trajectory from an opposition movement to the ruling political party.
