Montreal Canadiens emerge as primary landing spot for Mark Scheifele
The Montreal Canadiens have emerged as a primary landing spot for veteran Winnipeg Jets forward Mark Scheifele, according to reporting. Scheifele boasts a 16-year NHL career spent entirely in Winnipeg.
Trade Speculation Surrounding the Montreal Canadiens
Speculation regarding a potential move to Montreal has persisted for several weeks, driven by roster construction needs. Adam Gretz of Bleacher Report outlined the fit for the Eastern Conference franchise, noting that Montreal requires an upgrade at the second-line center position behind Nick Suzuki. Scheifele would provide a dynamic offensive pairing down the middle for head coach Martin St. Louis.
The veteran center is currently playing in his age-33 season. During the 2025-26 campaign, Scheifele skated in 82 games and recorded 36 goals and 67 assists for 103 points. He has appeared in just one game so far this season.

Contract Hurdles and Competing Franchises
A trade faces substantial logistical obstacles. Scheifele has not publicly requested a trade, and his contract includes a no-movement clause that complicates any immediate transaction.
Montreal is not the only organization tracking the situation. Other franchises cited as potential destinations include the Minnesota Wild, the Philadelphia Flyers, and the Boston Bruins.
Current Standing Ahead of the Pittsburgh Penguins Matchup
The trade rumors circulate as the Canadiens prepare to face the Pittsburgh Penguins at PPG Paints Arena on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2026. Montreal enters the matchup with a 1-0 record following a narrow 3-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs in their regular-season opener.
The Penguins also hold a 1-0 record after defeating the Philadelphia Flyers 7-0 on Wednesday. Puck drop for tonight’s game in Pittsburgh is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET, with oddsmakers listing Montreal as a slight favorite in the contest.
