Montgomery humane Society Faces Overwhelming Animal Intake Surge
By WSFA staff
MONTGOMERY, Ala.
the Montgomery Humane society is appealing to the community for assistance as it grapples with a significant increase in animal arrivals.
In June alone, the shelter received over 720 dogs and cats. Executive Director Steven Tears stated that these numbers are placing considerable pressure on the shelter’s staff, available space, and overall resources.
“It’s very expensive,” Tears commented. “The amount of medications to keep them healthy, the amount of food that we feed twice a day. It’s just incredibly expensive this time of year.”
Animals entering the shelter include strays found on local streets and pets surrendered by their owners.
To help manage this situation, the shelter is encouraging public involvement. Donations directly contribute to the costs of food, medical supplies, and daily animal care. volunteers are needed on days with high intake, and foster families can provide temporary homes for animals until they are adopted.
The Montgomery Humane Society also offers adoption specials throughout the year to make pet ownership more accessible. However, Tears advises potential adopters to carefully consider the financial and time commitments involved in bringing a new animal into their home.
“Although the emotional decision is ‘I want a dog,’ sometimes it might not be the right time,” he said. “That first vet bill is going to be more than $100. You have to be prepared.”
