Montague Libraries Host First Annual Halloween Costume Drive and Swap
Montague Public Libraries and The Brick House Community Resource Center are hosting their first inaugural Halloween costume drive and swap party through Oct. 9 to help families offset rising heating and grocery costs. The effort collects new or gently used costumes and accessories at two local locations before a swap event on Oct. 10.
Donation Bins Open Across Montague Through Oct. 9
Donation bins accepting new or gently used Halloween costumes and accessories are stationed at the Carnegie Public Library located at 201 Avenue A, alongside the main building of The Brick House located at 24 Third St. Montague Public Libraries community relations coordinator Lachlan Thompson stated that the initiative gives idle items a new purpose. A costume that’s been sitting in the back of someone’s closet collecting dust might be exactly what another kid has been looking for,
Thompson said in a statement reported by the Greenfield Recorder.
Brick House Assistant Director Hannah Bertrand and Montague Youth Services Librarian Angela Rovatti-Leonard conceived the drive after discussing the financial landscape amid rising heating and grocery costs. Bertrand noted that the program targets holiday affordability for local families. We wanted to try and help families afford Halloween this year,
Bertrand told the Greenfield Recorder. Halloween is such an exciting part of being a kid, and we want every child in our villages to have the chance to join in.

Swap Party Scheduled for Oct. 10 at The Brick House Annex
The collection effort culminates in a Halloween Costume Swap Party on Saturday, Oct. 10, running from 3 to 5 p.m. at The Brick House annex located at 22 Third St. Attendees can drop off items, pick up donated costumes, or participate in both activities without any requirement to bring a garment in order to take one home. Organizers confirmed that the event will feature light refreshments and a crafting activity.
Accepted donations include full sets of costumes for both children and adults, with children and teen sizes in highest demand. Organizers are also collecting individual accessories such as vampire fangs, fairy wings, capes, hats, masks, and wigs. The event mirrors existing resource distribution efforts at The Brick House, which regularly hosts winter coat and back-to-school drives.
