Monongalia County Schools Levy Renewal & Board Updates | Morgantown, WV

March 25, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Community leaders in Monongalia County, West Virginia are intensifying efforts to secure voter approval for the renewal of the Monongalia County Schools Excess Levy, with a virtual meeting scheduled for March 31 and a student showcase planned for April 12.

Teresa Nass, Communications Specialist for Mon County Schools, announced the upcoming Microsoft Teams meeting during Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting, stating it is intended to further advocate for the $35.6 million levy renewal that will appear on the May 12 primary election ballot. Following the virtual meeting, University High School will host a Spring Student Showcase on April 12, designed to highlight the impact of the levy on student programs.

Mon County Board of Education member Shawn Smith reported strong community support for the levy, which would provide funding for over 120 teaching positions. This positive reception has been consistent throughout public information sessions held earlier this year, and Smith anticipates it will continue leading up to the March 31 meeting. According to a release from the nonprofit Community for Mon County Schools, the levy is vital to supporting student success, educator support, and community growth.

The levy represents approximately 21% of the district’s total annual operating budget, generating roughly $35.6 million annually, a figure that has been consistent since 2022. The funds have been used to support Monongalia County Schools for 53 years, dating back to 1973.

In other business, the Board unanimously approved a contract with Thrasher Engineering Group to address stormwater issues at Morgantown High School, aiming to resolve problems that have left the school auditorium unusable for over two decades. Superintendent Eddie Campbell recommended the board approve the agreement.

The board also unanimously approved a contract with Frontline Master Services to serve as the exclusive application system for service and professional positions within the school system. This centralized system will streamline the hiring process for all positions subject to board approval. The contract was thoroughly reviewed by the administrative office prior to the vote, according to Campbell.

The Monongalia County Commission unanimously approved placing the levy on the May 12th primary election ballot in January, following approval from the Monongalia County Board of Education in December 2025 and subsequent state-level review. The levy will not include a tax increase if renewed by voters.
