Money Talks: Jenny Claffey – ‘Affording something doesn’t mean you have the money in your bank account’

Podcast Star Reveals Financial Highs and Lows

Jenny Claffey, a modern entrepreneur, recently discussed the financial realities of content creation on the “Money Talks” podcast, offering insights into the fluctuating nature of the digital space.

From “It Galz” to Solo Success

Claffey, known for her start as co-host of the popular “It Galz” podcast, ventured into solo territory in 2021 with “Red Room.” This true crime podcast delves into cults, conspiracy theories, and unsolved mysteries. She also uses social media platforms to share her pop culture recommendations.

Reflecting on her early podcasting days, Claffey shared, “The first year [of the It Galz podcast], actually I think I exactly matched my wage.” She continued, “So, I was like, OK, if I just kept doing this, I’m still making a pretty good wage. And then the next year I think we doubled that.”

Navigating the Ups and Downs

The content creator acknowledged the volatile nature of the business. “We were doing really, really well. I think I always knew that would happen, though, just in terms of how a business goes – you can go really up and then you might go down and then you find somewhere that’s a bit more steady. Also, it was hard to gauge because our biggest year was Covid.”

Financial success for content creators can vary wildly; a recent report indicates that only about 4% of creators earn a full-time living from their work (Influencer Marketing Hub, 2023).

Key Financial Insights

In the podcast, Claffey also talked about her spending habits, anxieties, methods for fostering online communities, and crucial financial advice that continues to benefit her today. The “Money Talks” episode hosted by Katie Byrne, is available on all major podcast platforms.
