Mona McSharry secured a silver medal in the women’s 100-meter breaststroke at the European Aquatics Championships in Paris, setting a new Irish record with a time of 1:05.41. According to race reports, the Olympic bronze medalist shaved 0.10 of a second off her previous best, finishing behind Britain’s Angharad Evans, who claimed gold with a championship record of 1:04.87.

Tactical Breakdown and Race Execution

Per official race splits, the Grange native sat second at the midway turn behind Italy’s Benedetta Pilato, while Evans pressed the pace from the outside. McSharry utilized a strong closing split to overtake Pilato in the final 20 meters, securing her first European long course medal.

The podium battle proved exceptionally tight among elite international competitors. Pilato finished third in 1:05.89, holding off reigning European gold medalist Eneli Jefimova of Estonia, who clocked 1:05.94. World champion Anna Elendt of Germany finished seventh with a time of 1:06.37.

In June, McSharry captured gold in the 200m, silver in the 100m, and bronze in the 50m breaststroke events at the Sette Colli meet in Rome, where her 200m gold-winning time of 2:22.71 landed just 0.49 seconds off her national record. Earlier in the season, she swept the 100m, 200m, and 50m breaststroke titles at the Irish Open, setting a national record and championship best of 2:22.22 in the 200m event.
