Mohamed Salah to Leave Liverpool in 2026: Striker Announces Exit
Mohamed Salah, the Egyptian forward for Liverpool, will depart the English Premier League club at the end of the 2025-26 season, Liverpool announced Tuesday.
The 33-year-old Salah, who joined Liverpool from AS Roma in 2017, currently ranks third in the club’s all-time scoring list with 255 goals across 435 appearances. He holds the Premier League record for most appearances with both a goal and an assist (42), and has amassed 281 goal contributions – 189 goals and 92 assists – for Liverpool, the most by any player for a single club in Premier League history.
“Leaving is never simple,” Salah said in a statement released by the club. “You gave me the best time of my life. I will be always one of you. This club will always be my home to me and to my family. Thank you for everything. Because of all of you, I will never walk alone.”
Salah’s departure comes despite signing a two-year contract extension with the Reds last April. During the 2025-26 campaign, he reportedly experienced friction with manager Arne Slot, being left out of the starting lineup on multiple occasions and publicly stating he no longer maintained a strong relationship with the manager. He also alluded to the possibility of seeking opportunities elsewhere.
“Liverpool is not just a football club, it’s a passion, it’s a history, it’s a spirit,” Salah stated. “I can’t explain in words to anyone not part of this club. We celebrated victory, we won the most important trophies and we fought together through the hardest time in our life.”
A four-time Premier League Golden Boot winner, Salah has been a pivotal figure in Liverpool’s recent success, contributing to eight major titles during his tenure. Liverpool acknowledged that, with important matches still on the schedule this season, a full celebration of Salah’s legacy will occur later in the year, following his final appearance at Anfield.
Liverpool currently holds fifth place in the Premier League standings with a record of 14 wins, 10 draws, and 7 losses, trailing fourth-place Aston Villa by five points and sitting 21 points behind league-leading Arsenal. The Reds are scheduled to face Manchester City in an FA Cup quarterfinal on April 4 in Manchester, England, followed by a Champions League matchup against Paris Saint-Germain on April 8 in Paris. Liverpool will then host Fulham in a Premier League match on April 11.
