Mohamed Salah to Leave Liverpool: Egyptian Star Confirms Exit
Mohamed Salah, the Liverpool forward, announced today he will depart Anfield at the conclusion of the 2025-26 season, bringing an end to a nine-year spell with the Premier League club.
The 33-year-old Egypt international confirmed his decision via a video message posted on his social media accounts, expressing profound gratitude for his time with Liverpool and its supporters. “Unfortunately, the day has come. This is the first part of my farewell,” Salah stated. “I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.”
Liverpool Football Club released a statement acknowledging Salah’s wish to inform fans directly and confirming an agreement had been reached regarding his departure on a free transfer. “Mohamed Salah is to bring the curtain down on his illustrious career with Liverpool FC at the end of the 2025-26 season,” the club said. “The forward has reached an agreement with the Reds that will see him close a remarkable nine-year chapter at Anfield.”
Salah arrived at Liverpool from AS Roma in June 2017 and quickly established himself as a pivotal figure in the team’s success. He has made 435 appearances for the club, scoring 255 goals, placing him third in Liverpool’s all-time leading goalscorers list, behind only Ian Rush and Roger Hunt. During his tenure, he has secured two Premier League titles, a Champions League title, the FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, and two League Cups, along with an FA Community Shield.
Despite signing a new two-year contract with Liverpool in April 2025, Salah’s relationship with head coach Arne Slot reportedly deteriorated, leading to speculation about a potential exit as early as the January transfer window. In December, Salah indicated he felt “thrown under the bus” by the club following a 3-3 draw with Leeds, according to reports. He ultimately remained with the team following his participation in the Africa Cup of Nations.
Although Salah expressed deep affection for the club and the city, his announcement comes after a season where his goal-scoring form has dipped relative to his previous standards. He has scored 10 goals in 34 games across all competitions so far this season, putting him on track for his lowest seasonal tally during his time at Anfield.
“I wanted to start by saying that I never imagined how deeply this club, this city, these people would become part of my life,” Salah said in his video message. “Liverpool is not just a football club. It’s a passion, it’s a history, it’s a spirit.” He also acknowledged the personal impact of events during his time on Merseyside, including the Covid-19 pandemic and the recent death of teammate Diogo Jota.
The club stated that Salah wished to announce his departure at the earliest possible opportunity “to provide transparency about his future due to his respect and gratitude for” the Liverpool supporters. His next destination remains unclear.
