Mohamed Salah to Leave Liverpool: Egypt Star Confirms Anfield Exit

March 25, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Mohamed Salah will leave Liverpool at the end of the current season, the Premier League club announced Tuesday, bringing to a close a nine-year spell at Anfield.

The 33-year-aged Egyptian forward arrived at Liverpool from Roma in 2017 and has made 435 appearances for the club, scoring 255 goals, according to the club’s statement. He currently captains the Egypt national team.

“Mohamed Salah is to bring the curtain down on his illustrious career with Liverpool at the end of the 2025-26 season,” the club said. “The forward has reached an agreement with the Reds that will see him close a remarkable nine-year chapter at Anfield.”

Salah, who is widely regarded as one of the best players of his generation, expressed his desire to make the announcement public to ensure transparency and demonstrate his gratitude to the supporters, the club stated.

While initial reports suggested potential moves to Saudi Arabian club Al Ittihad or Major League Soccer, Salah’s agent, Ramy Abbas Issa, clarified on social media that his client’s next destination remains undecided. “We do not know where Mohamed will play next season. This also means that no one else knows,” Issa posted.

Tributes from current and former teammates quickly followed the announcement. Andy Robertson, a current Liverpool player, posted on Instagram: “Mohamed, Thank you. 9 of the best years of our lives with amazing memories on and off the pitch. Watching you turn into the best at what you do…has been a joy.”

Salah was forced off the pitch during a Champions League match against Galatasaray last week after scoring in a 4-0 victory that secured Liverpool’s place in the quarter-finals. He had recently returned to form, scoring in three of his past four starts after a period of lower performance.

Despite his recent resurgence, Salah has scored only five Premier League goals this season, a significant decrease compared to the 29 he scored during Liverpool’s title-winning 2024/25 campaign.

In a video posted on social media, Salah reflected on his time at Liverpool, stating, “Liverpool is not just a football club. It’s a passion, it’s a history, it’s a spirit. We celebrated victory, we won the most important trophies and we fought together through the hardest time in our life.” He added, “Leaving is never easy. You gave me the best time of my life. I will be always one of you. This club will always be my home.”

Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock, speaking to BBC Sport, drew parallels between Salah’s departure and that of former manager Jurgen Klopp, questioning the impact on the team for the remainder of the season. “It’s almost taken it out of the club’s hands for the way they’ve dealt with it,” Warnock said.

John Gibbons, speaking on the Liverpool podcast The Anfield Wrap, predicted “shock” and “sadness” among Liverpool fans. He suggested that the departure could be mutually beneficial, given Salah’s high salary and recent performance levels. “He feels that every time he steps on the field, he feels the love, adoration, and support of so many supporters,” Gibbons said.

As of March 25, 2026, Liverpool has not announced any immediate plans to replace Salah, and the club has not commented on potential transfer targets.
