Mohamed Salah Leaves Liverpool: Goals, Titles & Legacy
Mohamed Salah has brought an end to his nine-year tenure with Liverpool Football Club, announcing his departure at the conclusion of the 2025-2026 season. The move marks the end of a highly successful period for the Egyptian forward with the Premier League club.
Salah has secured the Premier League Golden Boot award four times, equalling the record held by French legend Thierry Henry. These accolades came in the 2017-2018, 2018-2019, 2021-2022, and 2024-2025 seasons, solidifying his status as one of the league’s most prolific goalscorers.
During his time at Liverpool, Salah has amassed eight trophies, including two Premier League titles, a Champions League title, the FA Cup, two League Cups, the FIFA Club World Cup, and the UEFA Super Cup. He arrived at Anfield from Roma in the summer of 2017 for a reported fee of $50 million.
With 255 goals for Liverpool, Salah currently ranks as the third-highest goalscorer in the club’s history, trailing only Ian Rush (346 goals) and Roger Hunt (285 goals). He has made a total of 435 appearances for the club across all competitions.
Recent reports indicate a strained relationship between Salah and Liverpool manager Arne Slot. Following a 3-3 draw against Leeds United, Salah publicly expressed his frustration, stating, “I am incredibly frustrated, I have given a lot to this club, but it seems there are people who want to get rid of me.” He added, “I don’t understand why there is no longer a relationship with the coach, and why I feel like I am being thrown under the bus.” He even suggested inviting his mother to a future match against Brighton as a potential farewell.
The fallout from these comments led to Salah being left out of the squad for Liverpool’s Champions League match against Inter Milan. Thierry Henry, speaking on CBS Sports, criticized Salah’s decision to air grievances publicly, stating, “You don’t spread the dirty laundry in public, especially when the club is going through a difficult time.” Henry drew a parallel to his own experiences with managers Arsène Wenger and Pep Guardiola, emphasizing the importance of protecting the club’s interests. He added, “I understand Mohamed Salah’s ego and frustration. Scoring 38 goals and ending up on the bench… but there comes a time when you have to put the team’s interest above your own.”
Henry further elaborated on the importance of internal resolution, stating, “You wait and solve things internally, then, if you want to exit or express your opinion, do it at the right time.”
Even as Salah continued to train with the team, his omission from the Inter Milan squad signaled a deepening rift. The situation has prompted widespread speculation about his future, with numerous reports suggesting he is seeking a move away from Anfield.
