Mobile Breast Cancer Screening Comes to Rural France
Mobile mammography units are bringing breast cancer screening directly to women in rural communities of the Pyrénées-Orientales region of France, with a recent stop in Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet and an upcoming visit to Sournia. The initiative, spearheaded by the Agence régionale de santé (ARS) Occitanie, aims to overcome barriers to access for women who face long journeys to reach traditional hospital-based screening centers.
The “Mammobile,” as the mobile screening unit is known, is equipped with a full radiography system and staffed by a radiologist and a midwife. According to Karine Briot, coordinator of the local health contract for the Agly Fenouillèdes community of communes (CCAF), the unit’s arrival was carefully coordinated, requiring municipal authorizations and a suitable location with a flat surface, road access, and electrical connection. Briot oversaw the logistical arrangements for the Mammobile’s deployment.
The program prioritizes women aged 50 to 74 who have not undergone breast cancer screening in the past two years. The ARS Occitanie operates three such mobile units throughout the region, addressing a critical need for accessible preventative care. The speed of access is a key benefit; appointments, offered every ten minutes, were fully booked within three days, according to Briot, contrasting with potentially months-long waits for appointments at clinics or hospitals.
The Mammobile offers a free screening service, funded by the French health insurance system and the state. Women are asked to bring their national identity card (or passport or residence permit), their health insurance card (Carte Vitale), and, if available, any previous mammography results. The service is available without a prior appointment or referral.
The initiative reflects a broader effort to improve cancer screening rates in France. According to information from the ARS Occitanie, the Mammobile is one component of a regional strategy to increase early detection and improve outcomes for women with breast cancer.
