Moana Live-Action Trailer: Dwayne Johnson & New Cast Revealed | Release Date

March 24, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Disney Pictures has released the full-length trailer for its live-action adaptation of the 2016 animated film, “Moana.” The film, directed by Thomas Kail, is scheduled for theatrical release on July 10, 2026.

The remake features 17-year-old Australian actress Catherine Laga’aia in the title role, marking her film debut. She takes over the role originally voiced by Auliʻi Cravalho in the 2016 animated feature. Dwayne Johnson reprises his role as the demigod Maui, a part he originated in the animated film.

Joining Laga’aia and Johnson are Frankie Adams (“The Expanse”) as Sina, Moana’s mother; John Tui (“Battleship”) as Chief Tui, Moana’s father; and Rena Owen (“Once Were Warriors”) as Gramma Tala, a revered elder in the community.

The live-action adaptation follows Moana as she embarks on a journey beyond the reef of Motunui, guided by Maui, to restore prosperity to her people. According to Disney, the story centers on Moana answering the Ocean’s call.

Development of the live-action film was announced by Dwayne Johnson in April 2023. Thomas Kail was confirmed as director in May 2023, and Catherine Laga’aia was announced in the title role in June 2024, alongside the main supporting cast. Principal photography took place in Atlanta and Hawaii between July and November 2024.

Johnson, who is also a producer on the film, has spoken about the personal significance of the story, noting that his late grandfather inspired his portrayal of Maui. He previously stated that bringing Maui to life was a tribute to his grandfather.

The film is produced by Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, and Beau Flynn. Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller wrote the screenplay, adapting the story from Disney’s 2016 “Moana” which was originally written by Ron Clements and John Musker.

Recent reports indicate that Johnson’s portrayal of Maui required extensive prosthetics and a wig weighing over seven pounds, particularly challenging during scenes filmed in water. Johnson also noted that the costume added approximately 40 pounds to his physique.
