Cubs Shift Focus to Red Sox Star After Missing Out on Kyle Tucker

CHICAGO, IL – December 5, 2025 – The Chicago Cubs are reportedly pivoting their offseason strategy, now targeting Boston Red Sox outfielder Masataka Yoshida as a potential acquisition following their unsuccessful pursuit of Kyle tucker, who signed with the Houston Astros. This move signals Chicago’s continued commitment to bolstering their offensive lineup before the 2026 season.

The Cubs entered the offseason seeking a significant power bat after a season were offensive consistency proved elusive. While Tucker was their primary target, his decision to remain in Houston has prompted the front office to quickly reassess options. Yoshida, a left-handed hitter with a proven track record, emerges as a compelling choice, offering both power and on-base ability. He is estimated to command around $80 million in a potential deal.

Yoshida, 30, joined the Red Sox in 2023, signing a five-year, $90 million contract. In his first season with Boston, he batted .289 with 15 home runs and 79 RBIs. While the Red Sox have not publicly indicated a willingness to trade Yoshida, the Cubs are expected to explore the possibility aggressively, potentially offering a package of prospects in return.

The Cubs’ pursuit of Yoshida is further complicated by the Red Sox’s own offseason plans and the potential interest from othre teams. Though, chicago’s need for a reliable outfielder and their financial resources position them as a serious contender for the Red Sox star. The coming weeks will be crucial as the cubs attempt to negotiate a deal and solidify their roster for the upcoming season.
