MLB Opening Day Pitchers: 5 Must-Watch Matchups 2024
The announcement of Opening Day starting pitchers across Major League Baseball on Friday underscored the imminent start of the 2026 season. While each team’s selection holds significance, several matchups stand out as particularly compelling, offering a preview of potential storylines throughout the year.
The San Francisco Giants and New York Yankees will kick off the season on March 25th with a nationally televised contest on Netflix, featuring a duel between Giants’ ace Logan Webb and Yankees’ right-hander Max Fried. Though Gerrit Cole remains sidelined, Fried provides a formidable opponent, marking his fourth Opening Day start after three with the Atlanta Braves. Webb, meanwhile, is set to develop his fifth consecutive Opening Day start, having consistently ranked among the National League’s top Cy Young contenders for the past four years.
The following day, March 26th, will notice a highly anticipated matchup between Pittsburgh Pirates’ rookie sensation Paul Skenes and New York Mets’ veteran Freddy Peralta. Skenes, boasting an astonishingly low career ERA of 1.96, will face an immediate test against a bolstered Mets lineup featuring recent acquisitions alongside established stars like Francisco Lindor. The Mets have added Bo Bichette, Luis Robert Jr., and Marcus Semien to their roster.
Also on March 26th, the Boston Red Sox will host the Cincinnati Reds, with Garrett Crochet taking the mound for Boston against Andrew Abbott of Cincinnati. While the Reds will be without the injured Hunter Greene, Abbott’s strong 2025 performance – a 2.87 ERA and eighth-place finish in the Cy Young Award voting – suggests a competitive contest against one of Boston’s key pitchers.
Later that same day, the Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers will clash in a matchup between Zac Gallen and reigning World Series hero Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Gallen will be making his fourth consecutive Opening Day start for Arizona. Yamamoto, fresh off closing out Game 7 of the World Series on zero days’ rest, will aim to continue his momentum for the Dodgers, who added Kyle Tucker in the offseason.
On March 27th, the Kansas City Royals will welcome the Atlanta Braves, with Cole Ragans facing off against veteran Chris Sale. The Royals, buoyed by strong performances from Bobby Witt Jr., Jac Caglianone, and Vinnie Pasquantino in the World Baseball Classic, will rely heavily on Ragans’ return from injury. Sale, acquired by the Braves as a potential rotation depth piece, is now being counted on to anchor the staff, given the team’s need for a reliable veteran presence.
The Detroit Tigers and San Diego Padres will also play on March 26th, featuring Tarik Skubal against a yet-to-be-determined Padres starter. Skubal, the two-time defending American League Cy Young Award winner, enters a contract year, adding extra significance to each of his outings as he pursues a new deal and the Tigers aim to end their 41-season championship drought. The Padres have not yet announced their Opening Day starter, with Michael King and Nick Pivetta among the potential candidates.
