Japan Athletics Federation Appeal Denied in 3000m Steeplechase contact Case
TOKYO - An appeal by the Japan Athletics Federation regarding contact between Japanese athlete miura Ryuji and Kenyan runner Edmund serem during the final of the men’s 3000m steeplechase at the Tokyo World Athletics Championships on September 16th has been denied. The protest centered on whether Serem‘s actions constituted obstruction as Miura competed for a podium finish.
The incident occurred as both athletes navigated the final barrier and sprinted towards the finish line, resulting in multiple instances of contact. Serem ultimately secured the bronze medal, while Miura finished eighth. The Japan Athletics Federation initially protested to the chief judge, arguing Serem’s actions impeded Miura’s progress, but the initial decision was upheld upon appeal, leaving the competition results unchanged.
According to track and field regulations, obstruction is persistent when a competitor is “pushed or the runway is blocked, preventing the athlete from moving forward,” necessitating a judgment call by officials. The Tokyo World Athletics Championships are being held at the National Stadium from September 13th to 21st.
