Mitchell Mesenbrink Wins NCAA Wrestling Title, Penn State Secures 5th Straight Team Championship
CLEVELAND — Penn State’s Mitchell Mesenbrink secured the 165-pound NCAA Championship title Saturday night, defeating Iowa’s Mikey Caliendo with a dominant 20-4 technical fall at the Rocket Arena.
The victory elevates Mesenbrink’s career record to 80-1 and solidified Penn State’s claim to a fifth consecutive team championship. It marked the Nittany Lions’ first national title of the evening, setting the stage for further success in the tournament.
Mesenbrink, a junior from Hartland, Wisconsin, showcased his relentless attacking style, securing four takedowns in the first period alone. The decisive win came despite a cut above his eye, which did not deter his performance. He is now a two-time All-American, having been recognized in 2024, and 2025.
This is not the first time Mesenbrink has defeated Caliendo on the championship stage. He similarly won against Caliendo in the finals of the recent Big Ten Championships and in the 2025 NCAA finals, demonstrating a consistent dominance over his opponent.
Mesenbrink’s collegiate career began at California Baptist University before he transferred to Penn State. He quickly established himself as a key member of the Nittany Lions’ wrestling program, boasting a remarkable winning percentage of 98.8 – the highest in Penn State wrestling history for athletes with at least 50 matches. This surpasses the records of Ed Ruth (97.84) and Olympic gold medalist David Taylor (97.81).
Throughout the season, Mesenbrink led the NCAA in “Most Dominant Wrestler” standings, winning his first 24 matches with bonus points. He is considered a strong contender for the Hodge Trophy, awarded annually to the nation’s top wrestler.
Mesenbrink’s path to success included a silver medal at the 2022 U20 World Championships and a gold medal at the 2023 U20 World Championships. He is also a U.S. National champion and earned a bronze medal at the 2025 U23 World Championships.
The Penn State team championship marks a continued period of success under head coach Cael Sanderson. The Nittany Lions’ victory pushes them toward another NCAA record for consecutive team titles.
