MIT Neuroscientists Discover Human Brain Can Reason Without Words

According to research published in PNAS by neuroscientists at MIT’s McGovern Institute for Brain Research, the human brain does not rely on language processing regions to perform logical reasoning. Led by MIT associate professor of brain and cognitive sciences Evelina Fedorenko alongside postdoc Hope Kean, the study challenges long-standing assumptions about cognition by demonstrating that individuals with severe language impairments can still solve complex logic puzzles.

Lisa Yang Integrative Computational Neuroscience Center graduate fellow in Fedorenko’s lab, noted this structural resemblance in published commentary, observing that abstract thoughts resemble little atoms of logical propositions combined in a manner akin to language. Yet, functional brain scans of neurotypical participants administered during the MIT study show a distinct separation between logic activations and language activations.

To test whether this functional overlap was mandatory, the MIT researchers collaborated with University College London neuroscientist Rosemary Varley and her research group. Varley specializes in acquired language disorders, providing access to patients who suffered strokes that heavily damaged language-processing regions of the brain. Even with severe deficits in understanding and producing spoken or written sentences, these stroke survivors successfully navigated sophisticated non-verbal tasks. Participants examined lists of numbers to deduce hidden operational rules—such as reversing digit order or removing values above a designated threshold—and accurately applied those rules to new examples. A second matrix-based test replaced numbers with geometric designs, requiring subjects to determine missing visual patterns.

By proving that biological hardware can execute complex logical deductions without invoking linguistic parsing routines, the study forces a re-evaluation of current computational models.
