Missing Son: ‘Aunt Dudu’ Deception & Mom’s Despair

March 23, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

The mother of a South African man is desperately seeking information about her son, who she believes was deceived into traveling to Ukraine to fight in the conflict, according to reports from News24 on Monday.

The man, whose name has not been widely released to protect ongoing investigation efforts, reportedly responded to an offer to work as a security guard in Russia. His mother alleges he was then pressured to cross the border into Ukraine and take up arms, a claim she attributes to a woman known only as “Auntie Dudu.”

“He trusted this woman,” the mother stated in a News24 interview. “She promised him a good job, but instead, he was sent to the front lines.” She has not heard from her son in three months.

Details surrounding “Auntie Dudu’s” recruitment methods remain unclear, but authorities are investigating allegations that she and others are targeting vulnerable South Africans with false promises of employment, only to have them conclude up fighting in the war. The South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation has acknowledged the reports and stated they are providing consular assistance to South African citizens in both Russia and Ukraine, but has not released specific details regarding the number of citizens believed to be involved.

The case highlights the growing concern of foreign fighters being drawn into the conflict in Ukraine, and the potential for exploitation of individuals seeking economic opportunities. News24 reports that the mother is pleading for her son’s safe return and for a thorough investigation into the recruitment practices of those allegedly involved.

As of Monday, the South African government has not issued a public statement regarding the alleged recruitment scheme, and the whereabouts of the missing man remain unknown. The Department of International Relations and Cooperation has confirmed it is monitoring the situation and providing support to affected families.
