Mexico’s Fatima Bosch Crowned Miss Universe 2024 in Bangkok
BANGKOK, Thailand – Fatima Bosch of Mexico was crowned Miss Universe 2024 Saturday in Bangkok, Thailand, succeeding Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua. The 73rd annual competition saw judges grapple with unexpected departures during the event, adding to a period of significant transition for the association.
The win for Bosch marks a return to prominence for Mexico in the pageant, which has not secured the crown since 2010. The competition unfolded amid ongoing restructuring within the Miss Universe Organization following a recent change in leadership and the bankruptcy filing of its previous owner. The outcome signals a new chapter for the pageant as it looks to solidify its future under new management and a renewed focus on inclusivity.
The judging panel experienced two resignations during the competition itself. Former French soccer star Claude Makélélé stepped down Saturday, citing “unforeseen personal reasons,” following the earlier departure of a second judge whose name was not instantly released.
“I hold Miss Universe in the highest regard,” Makélélé stated on Instagram.
The judging panel shakeup occurred after a period of upheaval for the organization. Thai media tycoon Anne Jakkaphong Jakrajutatip stepped down as CEO in June, and Mario Búcaro was appointed to the role at the end of October, just days before the arrival of delegates from around the world. Jakkaphong, a transgender rights advocate, purchased the organization for $20 million in 2022, but her company filed for bankruptcy in 2023.
Next year’s Miss universe competition is scheduled to take place in Puerto Rico.
