In 2002, when Cameron Cortman was just one year old, his family was preparing to relocate to Virginia Beach, Virginia.Amidst the chaos of moving, young Cameron developed an ear infection. His mother, sensing something more serious than a typical childhood ailment, took him to the doctor.While initially diagnosed as a routine infection and prescribed antibiotics, a profound feeling persisted within her.
As Cortman recounts, his mother felt a divine prompting during the drive to the doctor’s office – a clear message that something was gravely wrong and immediate hospitalization was necessary. Remarkably, the doctor, a fellow Christian, respected her intuition, acknowledging the power of faith and agreeing to send Cameron to the hospital for further evaluation. This decision proved to be pivotal.
A Devastating Diagnosis
The results of the tests were shocking. Doctors discovered that 95% of Cameron’s blood cells were cancerous – acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The prognosis was grim; he was not expected to survive the night. This devastating news instantly transformed the family’s hopes for a fresh start into a desperate fight for their son’s life.
“As you can imagine,it’s just a mix of utter disbelief,and shock,and starting to grieve,and really just confusion of what to do,” Cortman shared. “And I think you kind of immediately go into a mode of, ‘OK, let’s figure out next steps.’”
Four Years of Courage and Faith
The following four years were marked by intense chemotherapy, frequent hospital stays, and a constant cloud of uncertainty. Chemotherapy, while essential in fighting the leukemia, carries significant risks, particularly for young children. the Cortman family leaned heavily on their community for support, grateful for the outpouring of love and assistance. However, their greatest source of strength came from their unwavering faith and a commitment to prayer.
“They just really sought to… understand from the Lord how they could be faithful through the journey,” Cortman explained. This reliance on faith wasn’t simply passive; it was an active pursuit of guidance and strength during an incredibly challenging time.
The uncertainty was agonizing. As Cortman recalls, doctors often measured his progress in weeks, unsure if he would even survive that long. “It was one of those situations where, ‘OK, I lived a week,’ than they’re like, ‘Let’s see how long he can live,’ basically, which is crazy to say,” he said.His parents faced the unimaginable stress of not knowing if their son would see another day,month,or year.
A Miraculous recovery and Beyond
Against all odds, Cameron’s cancer eventually went into remission. but the miracle didn’t end there. Doctors cautioned his parents that even in remission, the aggressive chemotherapy could have lasting effects, perhaps impacting his ability to speak, walk, or even function normally.
However, cameron defied these expectations. He made a full recovery, not only cancer-free but also with no lasting physical or cognitive impairments. He went on to become a college athlete, achieving a level of physical prowess that seemed unfeasible given his early prognosis. “to go from that to where I am today… a former college athlete [who] had the prospect to play sports at the highest level, it’s just only God,” Cortman stated emphatically.

Today, Cameron Cortman serves as the Director of Digital Marketing at Great American Media, a company dedicated to producing faith and family-friendly content. He views his role as a calling, a way to use his skills and passion to spread a message of hope and positivity.
“what I love about my role at Great American is I can wake up every day and know that… the social media posts that my team is creating or the ads that we’re making, we’re really pushing out good into society in a culture of entertainment that is doing the exact opposite,” he explained.
