March 23, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

One of Universal Pictures’ highest-grossing animated films, earning over $940 million worldwide, is now streaming on Netflix. Minions: The Rise of Gru, the 2022 comedy starring Steve Carell, became available on the platform today.

The film, a prequel to the Despicable Me franchise, features Carell reprising his role as Gru, an 11-year-old boy determined to become a supervillain. Alongside Carell, the voice cast includes Will Arnett as Mr. Perkins, Steve Coogan as Silas Ramsbottom, and Pierre Coffin as the Minions. New additions to the cast included Taraji P. Henson as Belle Bottom, Michelle Yeoh as Master Chow, Alan Arkin in his final film role as Wild Knuckles, Julie Andrews as Marlena Gru, Russell Brand as Dr. Nefario, Jean-Claude Van Damme as Jean-Clawed, Dolph Lundgren as Svengeance, Danny Trejo as Stronghold, and Lucy Lawless as Nun-chuck.

Directed by Kyle Balda, Brad Ableson, and Jonathan del Val, Minions: The Rise of Gru centers on Gru’s attempt to join the Vicious 6, a notorious supervillain group. When his application is rejected, Gru sets out to prove his villainous capabilities, aided by his Minion followers, Kevin, Stuart, Bob, and Otto. The film’s plot involves a stolen artifact and a reluctant mentorship with former Vicious 6 leader, Wild Knuckles.

The screenplay was written by Matthew Fogel, based on a story developed with Brian Lynch. Chris Renaud and Chris Meledandri served as producers for Illumination, with Heitor Pereira composing the film’s score. Minions: The Rise of Gru received a Popcornmeter score of 89% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The arrival of Minions: The Rise of Gru on Netflix follows the announcement that the first two Despicable Me films will be removed from the platform on April 1, 2026, according to reports from Yahoo Entertainment and What’s on Netflix.
