Dominican Surgeon Highlights Minimally Invasive Techniques as Revolutionizing‍ Modern Medicine

Santo Domingo, Dominican ‍Republic – Surgeon Andy de León underscored the transformative impact of minimally invasive surgery on modern ⁤medical practice during an appearance Thursday ⁢on the “Speaking of ⁣Health” programme, broadcast by El Nuevo Diario TV. De‍ León explained the shift away from traditional, large-incision surgeries towards safer, less invasive ⁤procedures with ⁤significantly faster patient recovery times.

“We have gone ‍from open surgeries with large incisions, to procedures ‍that are done through small⁤ holes, using highly specialized instruments ‌such as laparoscope, cystoscope or arthroscopy – known by many as ⁤’laser surgery,'” de León stated during the interview with medical professionals Pablo de la Mota, Rosmeri Jáquez, sergio solís Taveras, Lorenzo Brea, Elías Grullón and Rafael‌ Pérez.

The‌ orthopedic specialist detailed how technological advancements now allow doctors to visualize the body’s interior without extensive ⁣incisions. In orthopedics, he ⁤cited‍ the use of lenses as ‍small as 2.7 or 3 millimeters, enabling detailed,high-definition views of joints through tiny incisions. These small access points then allow for precise repair of injuries, suturing, fragment extraction, coagulation, and ⁤targeted ‍treatments.

De León credited general surgeons⁤ with pioneering these techniques through ⁢the introduction of the laparoscope, followed by significant contributions from urologists and orthopedists, specifically mentioning Professor Watanabe‘s pivotal role in the ⁣progress of arthroscopy in the late ⁢20th century.

“Today, ⁣it is indeed possible to operate an articulation without completely opening the area. This not ‌only ⁢reduces postoperative pain, but also the risks of‍ infection, hospitalization time and ‍accelerates‌ the return to the normal life of the patient,” he said.

De León affirmed that minimally invasive surgery is now a basic process⁢ in modern medicine, with applications spanning ‍a wide range of specialties including gynecology, urology, and orthopedics.
