Jonava Mayor Rejects Prime Minister Nomination

Jonava, LithuaniaMindaugas Sinkevičius, the Mayor of Jonava, announced Tuesday that he will not pursue the position of Prime Minister, despite being considered a leading candidate to replace Gintautas Paluckas. The announcement came as a surprise, as Sinkevičius was widely seen as the most viable option as of Tuesday morning, according to reports.

Sinkevičius stated his decision was influenced by a desire to continue serving the people of Jonava, who placed thier confidence in him during the recent mayoral election. He also emphasized the importance of his family’s opinion in the matter. “I want to continue working in my city,” sinkevičius said. “My withdrawal from the duties of the mayor would also mean the new election of the Jonava District Municipality Mayor, which would cost the state additional funds.”

The Mayor further explained that he coordinated his decision with his loved ones, who repeatedly expressed a desire for him to remain in Jonava. He stated he respects their wishes. This decision comes after discussions held on Monday within his family circle, as confirmed by 15min.

Sinkevičius declined to reveal the specific advice he offered his son, describing it as a private family matter. He also indicated a reluctance to publicly criticize colleagues within the Social Democrats. Ramūnas Sinkevičius, the Mayor’s father, confirmed the family discussion but offered no further details.

The Prime Minister’s post became vacant following Paluckas’s recent resignation. The Social Democratic Party is now tasked with identifying a new nominee. The next steps for the party remain unclear, but the decision considerably alters the political landscape in Lithuania. Jonava, a city of approximately 35,000 residents located 90 kilometers west of Vilnius, will retain Sinkevičius as its Mayor.
