Milan Fretin Wins Stage 3 of Tour of Guangxi After Magnier's Sprint Mishap

Milan Fretin Wins Stage 3 of Tour of Guangxi After Magnier’s Sprint Mishap

October 15, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Milan Fretin won the third stage of the Tour of Guangxi on October 15, 2026, after race leader Paul Magnier unclipped his foot under full sprint pressure in the final meters of the 212.3-kilometer route from Jingxi to Bama, Sporza reported. Magnier appeared positioned for a second victory before his foot unclipped under full sprint pressure, handing Cofidis its first WorldTour victory of the season.

Peloton Reels in Early Breakaway Before Sprint Finale

The stage through southern China offered a profile suited to fast finishers. An early breakaway featuring Jasha Sütterlin of Jayco AlUla, Tobias Bayer of Alpecin-Premier Tech, and Ruidong Wang representing the Chinese national selection built a lead of roughly three minutes before the peloton reeled them in with twenty kilometers remaining, as reported by Wielerflits. Sprint squads quickly took control of the narrow roads leading toward Bama.

Astana launched its lead-out train early in the finale to support Max Kanter. That acceleration brought Soudal Quick-Step forward to place Magnier in an ideal position for the closing straight. As Magnier opened his effort, his shoe detached from the pedal mechanism, destroying his momentum and leaving him out of contention.

Fretin Wins as Biesterbos Takes Race Lead

Fretin seized the opening to claim the victory ahead of Frits Biesterbos and Jordi Meeus, while Fabio Jakobsen finished fourth after navigating traffic in the closing meters. According to Wielerflits, Biesterbos finished second on the day and secured enough time bonuses to capture the overall race lead from Magnier, putting the Picnic PostNL rider in the leader’s jersey ahead of the hilly stage toward Tian’e.

Picnic PostNL coach Joey van Rhee noted that the team executed a precise tactical plan following early attempts by teammate Robbe Dhont to secure bonus seconds. “On the basis of vorig jaar waren we goed in staat de finale in te schatten en een strak plan te maken,” Van Rhee said, highlighting the preparation that allowed the squad to place Biesterbos into Magnier’s slipstream before the sprint unfolded.

Belgium Moves Ahead of Slovenia in WorldTour Rankings

The stage victory affected the international calendar. Sporza noted that Fretin’s win moved Belgium ahead of Tadej Pogacar’s Slovenia for the most WorldTour victories by country in the closing weeks of the 2026 season. For Picnic PostNL, the result provides a major boost during the final WorldTour event of the year, following earlier seasonal successes by Pavel Bittner and Casper van Uden.

Jakobsen also recorded a notable performance by fighting through traffic for fourth place after being boxed out earlier in the run-in, providing his setup with an encouraging sign after a challenging campaign. The race continues through Sunday.
