A popular Ocean Beach fisherman and youtuber is missing after his boat was found adrift off the coast of Baja California on Tuesday, prompting a multi-agency search effort.
Mikey Rijavec, known for his fishing videos, issued a mayday call approximately eight miles offshore while experiencing engine trouble, according to Phil Friedman, a close freind, fellow angler, and podcaster. The call disconnected abruptly, initiating the search.
The U.S. Coast Guard initiated the search on tuesday before transferring primary responsibility to Mexican authorities. Private boat owners and the Mexican Navyarealsoassisting
Rijavec was operating a 14-foot skiff powered by a six-horsepower outboard engine. the skiff was recovered five miles from the coast, but the engine remains missing.
“He’s an adventurer. He pushes the envelope. That’s part of what we love about him,” Friedman said.
The circumstances surrounding Rijavec’s disappearance remain unclear. “What could have happened? Oh my God,it’s endless. It could be foul play. You never know, it’s something that happens at sea sometimes. It could be a whale, it could be a shark,” Friedman stated.
Neighbors in Ocean Beach expressed concern for Rijavec’s well-being.”The fact that it was washed ashore with the storms down there. Baja can be stormy. I don’t know,” said Michael Robinson.
“It’s realy sad. He’s a really nice guy, and fishing is his passion,” added Isabella Atkinson.
Friedman remains hopeful, suggesting Rijavec may have reached shore or is utilizing a survival suit. “That would be, of course, my hope. My prayers and thoughts are for that kind of a resolution,” he said.
As of Wednesday, the search continues.
