Texas A&M Set to Secure Mike Elko with Lucrative Extension
COLLEGE STATION, TX – Texas A&M is poised to reward head football coach Mike Elko with a six-year contract extension, sources confirmed to ESPN Saturday, a deal expected to place him among the nation’s five highest-paid coaches. The extension is projected to average over $11 million annually.
The agreement comes as Elko, in his second season leading the Aggies, has orchestrated a remarkable turnaround for the program. Currently 9-0 and ranked No. 3 in the college Football Playoff rankings, texas A&M is on the verge of its first 10-win season since 2012 and only the second since 2000. A victory Saturday against South Carolina woudl achieve that milestone and mark the program’s best start since 1992.
Elko’s success builds on a strong foundation established during his previous tenure in College Station, where he served as the defensive coordinator under Jimbo Fisher from 2018-2021.Prior to returning to Texas A&M, the 48-year-old earned ACC Coach of the Year honors in 2022 while at Duke.
Through two seasons with the Aggies, Elko has compiled a 17-5 record. News of the impending extension was first reported by Yahoo Sports.
