Georgia QB Gunner Stockton Faces Crucial Test in 2025
Bulldogs’ New Signal-Caller Under Intense Scrutiny Amidst Championship Aspirations
After four years in Athens, quarterback Gunner Stockton is finally set to lead the Georgia Bulldogs. Having patiently waited his turn behind Carson Beck, Stockton stepped in last season and showed flashes of potential. Now, with Beck moving on, all eyes are on Stockton to deliver in 2025.
OC Mike Bobo Confident in Stockton’s Growth
Georgia’s offensive coordinator and QBs coach, Mike Bobo, provided insight into Stockton’s development. In a recent appearance on UGA Football on Dawg Post, Bobo described Stockton’s continued dedication. “He has not changed,” Bobo stated. “He’s in this offense now for his fourth year and some of the same notes, some of the same reminders, some of the same coaching points, and that guy every day is taking notes like he’s a first-year freshman.” This persistent work ethic is precisely what the Bulldogs need.
Stockton’s Limited Experience, Proven Grit
The former five-star recruit from Rabun County has a limited resume, with just five games played last season and 83 total pass attempts over three seasons. However, when called upon, Stockton delivered. He guided the Bulldogs to a 22-19 overtime victory against Texas in the SEC Championship, setting up the game-winning touchdown. In the CFP quarterfinals against Notre Dame, he threw for 234 yards and a touchdown, demonstrating his capability under pressure.
Teammate Oscar Delp expressed his confidence: “He’s been preparing like he’s a starting quarterback for four years. So, there’s no one I trust more than Gunner.” ESPN’s Bill Connelly even named Stockton “one of the most important players in the sport in 2025,” highlighting his potential impact.
Mixed Opinions on Stockton’s Potential
Despite support from within the team, not everyone is convinced. Sports analyst Paul Finebaum voiced his reservations on The Paul Finebaum Show, ranking Stockton “middle to lower of the pack” among SEC quarterbacks. “He has a lot to prove,” Finebaum asserted, questioning Stockton’s ability to lead Georgia to a national title. He did, however, compare his faith in Stockton favorably to his initial outlook on former Bulldogs QB Stetson Bennett.
Path to Success Hinges on Stability
Finebaum’s concerns are not entirely unfounded, as Georgia’s offense struggled last year, ranking 102nd in rushing and leading the nation in drops. However, with emerging talent like wide receiver Zachariah Branch and potential improvements to the run game, the environment for Stockton is improving. Georgia’s strong defensive foundation ensures a high floor, but the ceiling will ultimately depend on Stockton’s steady performance and development under center. The season kicks off August 30 against Marshall.
