Mihai and Denisa Chinez Laid to Rest After Offaly Tragedy

Mihai and Denisa Chinez Laid to Rest After Offaly Tragedy

October 1, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Mihai Chinez, 49, and his 24-year-old daughter Denisa Chinez were laid to rest following a workplace accident at Banagher Precast Concrete in County Offaly earlier this week.

Funeral Mass at St Rynagh’s Church in Banagher

Mihai and Denisa Chinez lived side by side and worked side by side at the Co Offaly plant before their coffins lay side by side at St Rynagh’s Church. Fr Pat Kiernan told the congregation that a single devastating moment in an honest day’s work took their lives. The father and daughter, originally from Romania, had worked at the company for a number of years.

Last Monday marked Mihai and his wife Angela’s 26th wedding anniversary, as well as his mother’s 87th birthday. During the morning break at the factory canteen, Mihai told his family they would get cake after work to celebrate. He sat with Denisa, his wife Angela, and Denisa’s fiancé Liviu Blaj, who also worked at the facility.

Little did they know it would be their last supper together, Fr Kiernan told the mourners. No cake, no candles, and no celebrations followed, replaced instead by cries of anguish, wooden coffins, and books of condolences.

Community Impact and Workplace Routine

Fr Kiernan recounted how the cheerful morning light was swallowed by an overwhelming wave of devastation, profound sadness, shock, and gloom that fell over the factory premises. The tragedy enveloped the town and surrounding community like a tsunami, stunning everyone and every street into silence and shock.

The parish priest noted that a good, decent family, willing and wanting to work to improve their lives, were abruptly stopped in their tracks. Mihai and Denisa shared a special bond that extended beyond a simple blood relationship. Their daily routine included a morning walk to work together, followed by lifting, cleaning, and preparing moulds side by side.

They shared the quiet pride of hard work together in a daily rhythm of companionship and friendship. Denisa was described as always cheerful, happy, and good-humoured with a big, generous heart. She held a strong faith and recently made every effort to secure Lourdes holy water. Mihai was recalled as a dedicated worker, a devoted father, and a steadfast companion striving to improve life for his wife and relatives.

Following the funeral mass, Denisa Chinez was laid to rest in St Rynagh’s Cemetery. Mihai Chinez’s cremation is scheduled to take place tomorrow. His ashes will be interred with his daughter at a later date.
