Migrants Attack Lithuanian Border Guard, Attempt to Drag Him into Belarus
A Lithuanian border guard was injured and nearly abducted by a group of illegal migrants who attempted to drag him into Belarusian territory following the discovery of an underground tunnel. The confrontation began when Lithuanian State Border Guard Service (VSAT) officers identified a tunnel constructed beneath the state border. According to reports from delfi.lt, officers intercepted a small group of migrants as they emerged from the passage. The situation deteriorated rapidly when approximately 20 additional individuals emerged from the tunnel, assaulting the officers with sticks and stones.
During the ensuing scuffle, the migrants attempted to forcibly pull one of the border guards across the border line into Belarus. The officer eventually managed to break free and escape, though he sustained injuries that required him to take sick leave. Vitalijus Jagminas, chairman of the Trade Union of Vilnius County Pre-trial Investigation Institutions, confirmed the officer’s injury status to local media.
Internal Oversight and Public Scrutiny
The incident remained out of the public eye until Vilma Danauskienė, a member of the Lazdijai District Municipal Council, disclosed the details on social media. Her public inquiry directed toward VSAT Commander General Rustamas Liubajevas questioned the tactical decision to deploy only four officers to manage a group of over 20 assailants.
Minister of the Interior Martynas Katelynas stated that his office had been informed of the tunnel discovery but was not briefed on the full extent of the violent altercation at the time. Following the public revelation, an internal investigation was launched into the command decisions of the VSAT leadership. Simultaneously, a pre-trial investigation into the unlawful crossing of the state border was initiated on July 27.
