Middle East Conflict: Impact on Ship Maintenance & Global Supply Chains

March 25, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

The Strait of Hormuz is poised to become a significant impediment to ship maintenance and safety, extending beyond vessels operating directly in the Gulf, according to warnings issued by Condition Monitoring Technologies (CMT) on March 25, 2026.

The escalating Middle East conflict, coupled with restrictions to vital shipping lanes, is creating a “double-barrelled hit” for the maritime industry, according to David Fuhlbrügge, joint Managing Director of CMT. The company, which specializes in engine performance diagnostics and fuel quality testing, anticipates that rising fuel costs and disrupted transport corridors will severely limit the ability of service providers, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and technical suppliers to support vessels globally.

“The Hormuz chokepoint combined with aviation routes restricted or closed across Russia, Ukraine, and much of the Middle East, is significantly increasing the time and costs getting service agents and equipment to global fleets,” Fuhlbrügge stated. The impact is already being felt through increased bunker prices and war-risk premiums, but CMT highlights the emergence of secondary effects throughout the maritime technical services sector.

The disruption extends beyond a simple energy crisis, impacting ships operating in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. These vessels are facing increasing difficulties in maintaining equipment and securing necessary supplies in a timely manner. Airspace closures and flight diversions are exacerbating the problem, leading to airline cancellations and surging jet fuel prices – in some cases, doubling within days – and sharply increased air freight costs between Asia and Europe.

CMT warns that the inability to access timely service doesn’t necessarily result in immediate catastrophic failures, but it does compromise maintenance cycles, machinery efficiency, operational safety, and potentially, regulatory compliance. While major ports possess some resilience through authorized partners, more remote locations are particularly vulnerable due to reduced access to specialized tools, monitoring equipment, and expertise, potentially leading to port delays or vessel diversions.

“This is a moment where the industry needs to think beyond freight rates and fuel costs,” Fuhlbrügge emphasized. “The resilience of maintenance ecosystems, the availability of technical support, and the ability to sustain operational safety are paramount.”

Recent reports indicate the conflict is already impacting maritime traffic. CMA CGM issued updates on March 25, 2026, regarding security transits through the Strait of Hormuz and Bab El Mandeb, acknowledging the evolving security situation in the Middle East. The Crisis Group reported on March 14, 2026, that the stoppage of traffic in the Strait of Hormuz has brought the conflict closer to home, with India halting purchases of oil as a result. Forex.com noted on March 22, 2026, that crude oil and energy markets are at a critical crossroads due to tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and Middle East supply disruptions.
