Microsoft Teams Admins Can Now Disable Profanity Filtering in Transcripts

November 5, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Microsoft Teams Admins Gain Control Over Profanity Filtering

Microsoft has introduced a new policy setting for Teams that allows administrators to disable profanity filtering within meeting transcripts. While filtering remains enabled by default, IT departments can now toggle this setting at the organizational level to meet specific compliance or internal documentation requirements.

The Tech TL;DR:

  • Admins can now disable profanity masking for meeting transcripts via organizational policy settings.
  • Live captioning remains governed by individual participant settings, independent of the transcript filter.
  • Internal investigations, HR complaints, legal disputes, or compliance reviews may benefit from an unfiltered transcript.

Automated Masking Alters Precise Communication Records During Investigations

Proanity filtering remains enabled by default. When internal investigations, legal disputes, or HR complaints require a precise record of communication, the automated masking may not reflect precisely what was said. The implementation of this feature requires a meeting policy update.

Operational Impact on Teams Meeting Participants

While the administrator-defined policy dictates the state of the transcript, individual users retain control over their own live captioning experience. This ensures that a participant’s personal preference for filtered text during a live call is not overridden by the organization’s requirement for an unfiltered, permanent record. This update arrived alongside a broader set of interface improvements, including a feature that allows users to pop calls into a new window to facilitate multitasking. Microsoft also added a way to require pre-meeting consent for all participants of a meeting.

Release Notes Omit Notification Details for Disabled Filtering

This week, Microsoft rolled out the feature. The release notes do not indicate whether meeting participants will be notified when an organization chooses to disable profanity filtering in transcripts.
