Microsoft Overhauls Copilot Interface With Home, Code, and Autopilot Modes

The Redmond, Wash.-based vendor is revamping how users interact with its flagship artificial intelligence tool by dividing functionality into targeted processing modes. According to Microsoft, the changes aim to match the right mode of intelligence to the specific task at hand. The updated experience introduces Home as a central starting point where users can ask Copilot Chat questions, look up information, draft content, and delegate tasks to a feature called Cowork.

Under the new architecture, users will soon no longer need to manually choose a specific mode. Microsoft states that Copilot will automatically route queries to Chat, Cowork, or Code on its own based on natural-language prompts. Alongside the main interface, an upcoming command center called Today is slated to enter private preview in October within Copilot, with planned expansions to Outlook and Teams. Today aggregates missed messages, calendar items, and Teams threads, while highlighting items requiring immediate attention.

Expanding Beyond Chat: Natural Language Application Building and Persistent Agents

The new Code capability, powered by the underlying technology of GitHub Copilot, allows non-developers to translate natural-language ideas into functional applications, dashboards, automations, and workflows. Scheduled to enter the Microsoft Frontier program at the end of September with broad availability to follow in the coming weeks, Code enables the creation of persistent desktop widgets, interactive dashboards, and cloud-hosted internal applications.

Meanwhile, Autopilot—formerly known as Scout—operates as a persistent, proactive personal agent. Hosted in the cloud with its own identity, memory, and workspace, Autopilot functions within organizational security and permission boundaries. Users can assign Autopilot a specific name, role, and goal to monitor channels, follow up on message threads, run recurring tasks, and resume projects independently without requiring continuous user prompting. Autopilot is expanding to private preview at the end of September.

Native Office Integration, Grounding Layers, and Usage-Based Billing

Microsoft is embedding the full capabilities of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint directly into the Copilot application. Users can build, edit, and update live, editable documents and spreadsheets that stay synchronized across team members without broken formatting or version drift. Enhanced grounding is provided by Fabric IQ, which moved into general availability through Chat and Cowork, alongside Work IQ, which enters public preview on September 30 with rollout continuing through October.

These platform updates coincide with pricing configuration changes for Microsoft 365 Copilot Business licenses aimed at small and midsize businesses. Effective November 2, eligible services will default to usage-based billing. Nicole Dezen, Microsoft’s chief partner officer and corporate vice president of global channel partner sales, noted in a statement that the release extends partner opportunities beyond basic productivity into complex commercial deployments and governance. Channel partners report increasing enterprise adoption of pay-as-you-go services as users use autonomous agents and advanced AI tasks.
