Microsoft Rebrands Gaming Division as Xbox, Expands Cloud and Subscription Strategy with Custom Game Pass Options

April 25, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Microsoft announced on Tuesday that it is reverting the name of its gaming division back to “Xbox,” reversing a 2022 rebranding effort that had grouped the unit under “Microsoft Gaming.” The change, confirmed in an internal memo reviewed by multiple industry outlets, aligns with a broader strategic shift to emphasize the Xbox brand as a unified platform encompassing hardware, cloud services, and subscription offerings.

The decision follows months of internal review and public signaling from company leadership about the future of its gaming business. In March, Microsoft disclosed plans to reassess exclusivity policies for its first-party titles, signaling a potential expansion of Game Pass beyond Xbox consoles to competing platforms. That review, still underway, has prompted speculation about whether future releases from studios like Bethesda and Activision Blizzard will debut simultaneously on PlayStation and Nintendo systems.

Concurrently, the company has tested flexible subscription models for Game Pass, including a “DIY” tier that allows users to customize their access to specific game libraries rather than accepting a bundled catalog. Early trials of this approach, reported in South Korean media, suggest Microsoft is exploring ways to reduce churn by offering lower-cost entry points tied to individual genres or franchises.

Industry analysts note that these moves reflect growing pressure to monetize Microsoft’s $70 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard while navigating regulatory scrutiny in multiple jurisdictions. The Federal Trade Commission’s ongoing challenge to the deal, though weakened by recent court rulings, continues to influence how Microsoft structures its gaming ecosystem.

Despite the rebranding reversal, Microsoft has not indicated any changes to its leadership structure within the gaming division. Phil Spencer remains head of Xbox, reporting directly to CEO Satya Nadella. The company has not scheduled a public event to announce the name change, treating it as an internal operational adjustment rather than a strategic pivot requiring external communication.

As of Wednesday, Microsoft’s official investor relations page still listed the division under “Microsoft Gaming,” while internal communications and developer-facing portals had begun using “Xbox” exclusively. The discrepancy suggests a phased rollout, with public-facing materials expected to follow in the coming weeks.

No official comment has been issued by Microsoft regarding the timing or rationale behind the name reversal. Requests for clarification sent to the company’s corporate communications office remained unanswered by the close of business on Wednesday.
