Michigan vs Michigan State: Jeremy Fears Kicks Elliot Cadeau – Controversy & Highlights
A review of a play during the second round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament between Michigan State and Louisville on Saturday led to a flagrant foul call against Michigan State guard Jeremy Fears Jr., officials announced. The incident occurred with approximately 10:50 remaining in the first half, and involved Louisville guard Elliot Cadeau.
Video replays appeared to present Fears’ foot making contact with Cadeau’s head while Cadeau was on the floor. Officials initially assessed a common foul, but reviewed the play and upgraded it to a flagrant foul type 1. Fears was ejected from the game, and Louisville was awarded two free throws and possession of the ball.
Fears, a 20-year-vintage sophomore, entered the tournament averaging 15.7 points and a nation-leading 9.2 assists per game for the Spartans, according to USA Today. He was considered a key component of Michigan State’s tournament hopes. Prior to the incident, Fears had seven points on 2-of-6 shooting with 11 assists in Michigan State’s first-round victory over North Dakota State.
The ejection significantly impacted Michigan State’s offensive flow. The Spartans ultimately defeated Louisville 77-69, but the loss of Fears was a notable factor in a game that remained competitive until the final minutes.
Fears was a consensus four-star recruit and one of the top players in the 2023 class, committing to Michigan State after considering offers from other programs, including Illinois, according to Wikipedia. He has been recognized as a potential All-American, with projections for Second-team All-American honors from the Associated Press in 2026.
As of Saturday evening, the NCAA has not announced any further disciplinary action regarding the incident. Michigan State is scheduled to play in the Sweet Sixteen round of the tournament next week.
