ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The University of Michigan men’s basketball team maintained its No. 1 ranking in the Associated Press poll on Monday, despite a narrow 91-88 home win over Wisconsin on January 10th, and now faces a crucial Considerable Ten matchup against No. 7 Purdue on Tuesday.

Michigan (24-1, 14-1 Big Ten) ascended to the top spot last week following losses by previously ranked Arizona. The Wolverines have secured 13 victories by a margin of 20 or more points, demonstrating their dominance within the conference. Their only defeat came against Wisconsin, a 91-88 setback at Crisler Center.

Purdue (21-4, 11-3 Big Ten) has rebounded from a three-game losing streak with a current winning streak, including three road victories. The Boilermakers are tied for third in the Big Ten standings with Nebraska, two games behind Michigan. Purdue’s success hinges on the performance of point guard Braden Smith, who will need to achieve a double-double with at least 20 points to challenge Michigan, according to analysts.

Elsewhere in the Big Ten, Michigan State (20-5, 10-4) will host UCLA (17-8, 9-5) in a game with significant implications for both teams. The Spartans have lost three of their last four games, including a 92-71 defeat at home against Wisconsin on Friday. Michigan State also needed overtime to secure a win at Rutgers during that stretch.

The matchup between Michigan State and UCLA features a compelling point guard battle between Jeremy Fears Jr. Of Michigan State, who leads the nation with 9.2 assists per game, and Donovan Dent of UCLA, who averages 7.0 assists. Last season, UCLA narrowly defeated Michigan State 63-61 on a late basket by Eric Dailey Jr.

UCLA is coming off a lopsided 86-56 loss at Michigan on Saturday, where coach Mick Cronin criticized his team’s second-half defensive performance, calling it “the worst of my career.” Michigan shot 78.3% from the field in the second half, including an 18-for-23 effort. Trent Perry led the Bruins with 14 points, while Donovan Dent and Tyler Bilodeau each added 10.

In the Mid-American Conference, Miami (Ohio) (25-0, 12-0 MAC) remains undefeated and faces UMass (15-11, 6-7). The RedHawks are the national leader in scoring, averaging 92.6 points per game, and are fifth in three-pointers made per game with 10.1. UMass lost a close contest to Miami (Ohio) on January 27th, 86-84, and will look to avenge that defeat on their home court. The RedHawks have a perfect 10-0 record on the road.
